The program also offers free immunization clinics for uninsured and underinsured adults every Saturday in September. Doctors suggest parents take advantage of the clinic, which offers vaccines for both kids and adults. Dimer recommends the vaccine for parents and caregivers – “anyone that would smooch a baby,” she says. The goal is to avoid having hospitals packed with newborns come January. “Anyone that’s going to be around their child or baby – caregivers, grandparents, aunts, uncles – everyone. Make sure they’re vaccinated,” says Dimer. Michelle says she’s grateful her little girl won the battle, and she hopes others can learn from their experience.

Hospitals commonly develop medical staff development policies to monitor their manpower needs, Dr. Geraci said. “There are unwritten [conflict of interest] policies that may exist. What makes this instance stand out is because it was written down and it was formally adopted.” Ms. Miele acknowledged that Excela expects to post “double-digit millions of dollars” in operating losses when fiscal 2012 audited results are released in two weeks, although investment gains should put the health system in the black overall.

Nutrition, Public Health And Food Stamps

A Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study of the impact of the cuts that some in Congress proposed found they would lead to greater poverty and food insecurity, with as many as 1.2 million children losing eligibility for free or reduced price school meals. Opponents of the SNAP program claim it suffers from problems of fraud. That is not true; the rate is low and falling. Others claim that too many are eligible for SNAP. That is the result of our current recession, which began in 2007. Some wonder what people buy with SNAP. The answer is foodbut no food that will be eaten in the store and no hot food.

Nutrition Q&A: Getting fiber from whole grains

Gallery Health expert-approved recipes: Elaine Gordon, a certified health education specialist, offers her picks for everything from breakfast to dessert. A: Your questions seem simple, but theyre not. Answering them, however, is important because they focus on two healthful eating goals: 1) Eat more whole grains and 2) Eat more dietary fiber. Both are supported by research evidence. Eating sufficient whole grains, as part of a healthful eating plan, can protect against cardiovascular disease and help maintain a healthful body weight. Some research shows that eating enough whole grains can reduce insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Research on dietary fiber shows that a sufficient amount can protect against cardiovascular disease, obesity and Type 2 diabetes, and can promote digestive health .

Realistic Expectations For New ‘breakthrough’ Blood Pressure Technology

Many more companies are working on new devices. Measuring Blood Pressure: Its Complicated Why the discrepancy between office-based measurements and ABPM? The same discrepancy between office measurement and ABPM has also been seen in trials of blood pressure drugs, but disappears in randomized, double-blind trials. In those trials ABPM measurements will generally be lower than office-based measurements, but the difference between the placebo and active arms will be consistent. The authors of theHeartpaper offer a number of reasons why office measurementsare often less reliable.

Blood pressure

Blood pressure readings are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and are given as two numbers. For example, 110 over 70 (written as 110/70). The top number is the systolic blood pressure reading. It represents the maximum pressure exerted when the heart contracts. The bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure reading. It represents the minimum pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest. To obtain your blood pressure measurement, your health care provider will wrap the blood pressure cuff snugly around your upper arm, positioning it so that the lower edge of the cuff is 1 inch above the bend of the elbow.

Will Vitamins Extend Your Lifespan Or Just Shrink Your Piggy Bank?

iStockphoto Recently researchers delivered a double dose of negative press for consumers regarding the use of vitamins and supplements. First, the University of Minnesota reported the results of the 19-year Iowa Women’s Health Study, which followed more than 38,000 women who were around age 62 at the start of the study in 1986. It found that the use of multivitamins actually slightly increased the risk of death for these women. Then came news that the regular use of Vitamin E actually increased the risk of prostate cancer in men, in a study funded by the National Cancer Institute and reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Initially, the cause of the baldness will be identified. After the cause of the baldness has been identified, effective treatment options will be recommended. It is important to note that because there are different causes of male hair loss, not every type of treatment will be effective for every man. Some people might have excellent results from over the counter treatment options, but this type of treatment is not effective for treating every one of the most common causes of hair loss in men. Furthermore, some treatments provide men with synthetic hair as a replacement for their natural hair, which is not ideal for most men. Finding the right treatment involves providing men with the results they want to see. Puig Hair Restoration Center strives to provide men who are dealing with hair loss with an effective way to overcome their challenges.

This may be easier for women because inherited hair loss ( androgenetic alopecia ) causes a general thinning that is usually not as severe as it is in men. Hair sprays, dyes, and perms can help make the hair appear fuller. In women with inherited hair loss, hair care and the occasional use of grooming products, hair sprays, hair color, teasing, permanents, or frequent washing will not increase hair loss. But if your hair loss is caused by hair care, then perms and dyes may contribute to more hair loss.

High Blood Pressure Risk Rising Among U.s. Youths

Bernard Rosner, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass., said in a statement . “It’s a very sneaky thing.” High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a problem in which blood pushes too hard against a person’s blood vessels, potentially causing damage to the vessels and organs like the heart, according to WebMD . Risk factors for hypertension in children include obesity, sodium intake and family history. U.S. dietary guidelines suggest people eat no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, while the AHA recommends an even lower threshold of 1,500 daily milligrams. The AHA estimates 97 percent of children and teens eat too much salt, putting them at risk for high blood pressure and eventual heart disease.

Blood pressure drugs up breast cancer risk

Our readers’ trust comes first. In a new study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, a web-based patient intervention to overcome clinical inertia on blood pressure control didn’t improve outcomes. Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa., tested the effect of the intervention, designed to help patients ask questions at the point of care to encourage primary care physicians to appropriately intensify blood pressure treatment. Two groups were tested over 12 months–an intervention group that used a fully automated website each month to get specialized messages suggestion questions to ask PCPs, and a control group that had a similar tool suggesting questions to ask about preventative services. Although most patients used the web-based tools to ask questions, there were no group differences in blood pressure control after 12 months between the control and test groups. The use of the website did not lead to improvements, health-wise. The study concluded, “By providing patients with individually tailored questions to ask during PCP visits, this study demonstrated that participants were likely to discuss the questions with PCPs.

Online intervention found useless for blood pressure control

“Evidence regarding the relationship between different types of antihypertensives and breast cancer risk is sparse and inconsistent, and prior studies have lacked the capacity to assess impacts of long-term use,” the study said. The population-based study in the three-county Seattle-Puget Sound metropolitan area included women ages 55 to 74 years: 880 of the women had invasive ductal breast cancer, 1,027 had invasive lobular breast cancer and 856 of them had no cancer and served as the control group. Researchers measured the risk of breast cancer and examined the recency and duration of use of antihypertensive medications. According to the results, current use of calcium-channel blockers for 10 or more years was associated with higher risks of ductal breast cancer and lobular breast cancer.

The 6 Weight-Loss Tips That Science Actually Knows Work

For every action theres a reaction; thats a law of physics, not of biology, but it seems that it also works in biological systems. This is why we often overestimate quite radically an effect of a particular treatment. He points out that public health campaigns that, for example, urge people to take the stairs instead of the elevator or go on a nightly stroll or, for that matter, even eat fewer calories are unlikely to work, since they may fail to take into account the bodys compensatory mechanisms that can totally counteract the effect. The other problem with exercise-without-dieting is that its simply tiring, and again, the body will compensate. If the exercise made you tired so that you become more sedentary the rest of the day, you might not experience any net negative energy, says Klein. Some of the calories we burn come from our basic movements throughout the day so if youre wiped out after exercise, and more likely to sit on the couch afterwards, youve lost the energy deficit you gained from your jog. 2.

Washington DC Exercise Specialist Debunks Common Weight Loss Myths

“Most think that it is a simple addition/subtraction equation when there is much more involved.” When a person does not eat enough throughout the day, the body goes into starvation mode and whatever the body does take in is quickly converted into fat. Since the body in starvation mode does not know the next time it will eat, the body stores food as fat for fuel. Contrary to what patients might think, Petruzzi highlights: “You have to eat in order to lose. Eating clean and healthy many times throughout the day (4-5 meals) will greatly increase your metabolism, help you lose weight, and burn the excess storage (fat).” Many of Petruzzi’s patients are fearful that rapid weight loss or weight loss surgery necessarily results in remaining excess skin. Fortunately, he says, there is a way to combat excess skin and greatly alleviate the problem: strength/resistance training. “Strength training helps initiate the elasticity we have in our skin so that when we are losing weight rapidly our skin has some rebound and will get tighter and firmer,” says Petruzzi.
